Grow Avenue Residential Remodel |
|
The Owner approached us about assisting him with the design for a remodel and addition for his authentic 1958 rambler. The addition is to face the side street and include a two car garage with a family room space above. The remodel includes rebuilding the existing one car carport as a sunroom and new entry off the side street, adding a second bath and integrating the addition. Located on a large lot within Winslow, the house faces Grow Avenue and Ihland Way. Grow Avenue has become busier with traffic as the island population has grown so it was decided that the primary entry would be moved to Ihland with the new garage access. To maintain the mid-century character which fits with the general context of the neighborhood the Grow Avenue façade is not substantially altered. The siding, roofing and windows of the existing house are to be replaced and seismic upgrades added to the foundation. The two elevations of the new sunroom are composed with the elements of mid-century Northwest architecture to emphasis the regional character of the ranch style and to relate to the new accessory dwelling unit that is to be built to the east, or left of the residence on Ihland in a classic Northwest mid-century style. The massing of the addition is very straight forward and reflects the interior volumes defined by the client’s program. To reduce the scale of the large two story wall facing Ihland (and sitting next to the smaller one story gable elevation) two siding materials are used and a large window on the stairway is built with a projection as a scale devise. A covered deck is included on the southwest corner of the second floor of the addition from which a view of the Olympic Mountains can be enjoyed. |
