POINT MONROE MASTER SUITE

Architects Thomas designed the remodel of this master suite in 2010.  Construction was completed in 2011.

The site, Point Monroe (known locally as the Sand Spit) on Bainbridge Island, gives the house water views on two opposite sides which this project takes great advantage of.

The space, which was previously the master suite, occupies the full second floor of the south wing of the house.  This provided us full views to the east of Puget Sound and the Cascades and to the west of the inner bay of Point Monroe and the Olympic Mountains in the distance.

The existing plan was very chaotic.  There was no order or efficiency to the space:  the bathroom did not take advantage of the view, the proportions of the closet did not work, and the finishes were old and ready for replacement.

In our initial conversation the client requested that we open the bathroom to the covered deck on the west side of the house and select new fixtures and finishes.  We came back with a more comprehensive and audacious renovation, which they loved and gave us the approval to move ahead with.

The bathroom now occupies the full width of the west end and the bed area has the full width of the east end, giving these two primary spaces the best of the views.
The support spaces - closets, stairway and laundry - are arranged along a central connecting corridor and closed off by four sliding shoji screen doors.
The bathroom and the bed area have wonderful high ceilings with tall windows. As a point of contrast the ceiling of the connecting hallway is low and the space contained.

The exterior wall of the bathroom is built with three sliding doors that open the wall to the deck and view.  The tub sits at one end of the space while the shower occupies the other. The east wall is a bank of cabinets that serve the bathroom, the laundry and, the toilet room.  To keep the center of the room feeling open and light, the vanities are minimal: clear glass bowls and counter tops which are supported by stone clad pillars. To provide the necessary support space for the vanities, the gentleman has a small cart with a mirror attached which rolls out of the wall of cabinets.  The lady has a wide make-up station behind bi-folding cabinet doors.  A shoji screen in the wall of casework conceals the toilet room.

The proportions of the new bed area provide generous room to the north for the bed and a fireplace and sitting area to the south.  The door opens to a narrow balcony that is just above the beach and captures all the sounds of the shore line.  On a clear day, the tops of the Seattle skyline can be seen from the bed.

There is a very compact space for a stacked washer dryer and his and her closets built out with custom casework.
