ACCESSIBLE TREEHOUSE |
|
Architects Thomas has been honored to provide architecture and project management services for several IslandWood projects. IslandWood is a non-profit environmental education center on Bainbridge Island. Their mission is to provide exceptional learning experiences and to inspire lifelong environmental and community stewardship. Completed in 2006, the Accessible Treehouse is a covered platform built in the trees 20 feet above a seasonal stream at the transition of the forest from evergreen overstory to deciduous wetland vegetation. There is room for a class of 20 to work on their nature journals under the roof and to explore the views from the deck around the perimeter. The Treehouse is made accessible by a near level ramp from the adjoining hillside and gives those who do not usually have the opportunity to experience the feeling of being up in the trees looking through the cracks between the floor boards to the ground below a new perspective. This is Phase I of the project. Phase II will consist of a second platform on the opposite side of the ravine. The platforms will be linked by a 50 foot long bridge. This second platform will be open to the tree above and is planned to have climbing harnesses with the means to hoist all those brave enough up into the upper part of the tree for a real bird’s eye view.
